- What swivel is right for my speed bag and platform?
There are three major types of swivels that you can choose from, each offer different benefits.
The most affordable swivel available is the ball hook. It is an S shaped piece of metal or plastic that connects with the swivel body on one end, and your bag on the other. These ball hook swivels are very easy to attach to most platforms and can be easily replaced in case of breakage. The S hook provides nice rebound and freedom of movement, although is a bit noisier then other choices.
A highly durable alternative to the S hook is the chain link swivel. This style features a steel chain link that attaches to a ball bearing powered swivel base. The chain link style provides fast rebound and can be trusted for heavy, repeated use.
The newest brand of swivel is EZ Lock/Mexican style swivel. These utilize a U-shaped piece of metal that is closed with a pushpin device and is attached to a ball bearing style swivel base. These are gaining in popularity due to the ease of which you can put speed bags on and off them.
- Do I need a platform or can I just use a swivel?
It is possible to buy a swivel and simply attach it to your ceiling or a similar wooden post. However, most people ultimately have bad experiences with this as the height rarely works out and the bag has nothing solid to rebound off of. It is highly recommended that you purchase a speed bag platform in addition to a swivel and a bag.
- Should my swivel be able to swing in any direction, or just back and forth?
Although it would seem best if the speed bag were limited to pure front and back movements, many boxers prefer to allow a circular flexibility. This twisting goes with the natural movements of punching and keeps the rebound of the bag going. Furthermore, it challenges your technique to improve as wayward strikes can ruin the trajectory of the bag. Most swivels are built with the ability to spin.
- Will my bag fit with a Mexican style swivel?
Some boxers have noticed difficulty in fitting their speed bags onto Mexican style swivels. The reason why is that the Mexican Swivel has a tighter formed metal loop that is designed to better keep the bag in place. When the bag fits, the design is to the boxers advantage. However, there are a few bag models that feature very wide leather loops to fit over swivels and are difficult to slide into the Mexican loop. If you find yourself in this situation, you may be able to trim the loop down or loosen the material enough to pack it in, but it is best to consider this possibility before purchase.
Most speed bags fit fine, but if your bag has a noticeably wide loop, take that into consideration.
