What weight bag?

I'm 6 feet tall, 190, and I would like to work out with a heavy bag & speed bag in my basement. What weight heavy bag should I get?

I think the 80lb bag would be the minimum weight for you, and perhaps the best option if you don't have a lot of experience with bag work yet. A 100lb bag would be a viable option, although it would be a bit tougher on the hands and joints.

60 or 70 pound bag?

I am 5'5 125 lbs. and female. I have taken boxing classes in the past and wish to purchase my own bag. Should I get a 60 or 70 pound bag. What would be the difference in choosing workout punching-wise?

Due to your experience you would probably be ok either way, but the 60lb bag will give you a little more bag swing. I tend to think that's better for workouts because it involves more footwork and concentration vs striking power in order to stay with the bag.

I'd recommend the 60 :-)

Hi Steph. I think the 60 or 70lb heavy bag would be a good weight for you. As for the model, the bag on this page would be a good choice. The nevatear exterior and foam interior should be able to handle temperature change and imperfect conditions. Don't forget a pair of gloves too!

Hi Leelee. The bag on this page would be a fine choice - I would recommend the 60lb bag weight. I'd also recommend getting a bag mount for when you go to hang it: bx-ac-36.

Another option for you would be to get a freestanding bag. You can put them wherever you want and don't require hanging or a solid ceiling beam: bx-hv-161.

Big and Tall Looking to get in shape

I am 29 years old and looking to revive my love for heavy bags. I am 6'5" 285 lbs. I am starting a diet and exercise regimen, and would like to use a heavy bag for my workouts. I have used bags as a kid and into my early teens when I was involved with Tae Kwon Do. What bag size do you recommend?

I think if you want a lot of bag swing you could go with an 80lb bag, however for your size and weight you could also utilize a 100lb bag for resistance.

Hey gypsy. I'd recommend going with a bag like the one this bag. Foam filled, durable vinyl exterior, not too pricey. As for the weight, I think 70lbs would be perfect for his age and experience level.

If you're expecting another growth spurt and more muscle mass, bump it up to 80 (but I wouldn't go higher than that).

This bag is awful. I purchased the 100 lb version. Had it only 3 months and the bottom fell out. Right in the middle of a workout the bottom of the bag busted out of the seems and the stuffing starting falling out. Also, "nevetear"? Thats a joke. At the top of the bag where the chains are connected to the bag, the material was tearing away. Eventually the bag would have probably fallen down, leaving the chains hanging from my basement beam. I would not recommend this bag to anyone. Waste of money.

Hi Hunter. Right now you would probably be best suited with a 50lb bag, but as get older you'll want more resistance. Perhaps something like a 70lb bag would be good. Consider these options: bx-hv-707, bx-hv-380, bx-hv-656.

hello
i'm a beginner and looking to get some heavy bag to mostly let stress out.
I'm 5'7" and about 175 lbs. - I do not have much space except for an outdoor patio (roofed).

which bag would you recommend? i would be needing a stand as well since i've heard that the floor bag stands tend to break. heard as well that some are easy on the hands.

thank you

Hey Frank. Getting a heavy bag is a great way to relieve stress. For your height and weight I would recommend a 70 or 80lb bag. Any more than that and you might end up injuring your joints. This one here is really nice: bx-hv-209.

As for a stand, this one is affordable and high quality: bx-ac-853. If you think your roof can handle the impact and jostling you could drill a mount right into it, like this one: bx-ac-24.

I'd also highly recommend you grab some gloves (your hands and wrists will thank you). Here is a nice inexpensive pair: bx-gl-40, and here is a cool high quality pair: bx-gl-228.

Hey wako. If I were you I would go with 70/80 lbs. You'll get plenty of resistance, but also a little bit of swing so as to add interest and timing to your training.

Perhaps a few years down the road if you really develop killer striking power you can go up to 100.

Bag for my husband

My husband and I are trying to find a heavy bag for him. He's 6' 3", 150 lbs. What size bag should he get? Should we get a bag that is already filled, or fill it ourselves?

Also, I am concerned about hanging it from a beam in our basement. Is that putting too much strain on the beam? What kind of mounting bracket would be best?

Thank you!
by: KLN
3/8/2011 9:34:52 PM
Was this helpful? (0) (0)
Hey KLN. I recommend a 70lb bag. It'll be adequately heavy for your husband and manageable for you as well. Getting the bag filled is much less work, and since we offer $2.95 shipping you'll probably end up paying less money anyway (vs the cost of sand, shredded textile, and time spent).

You'll want to assess of the beam in your basement is attached do a solid part of your house (load bearing type beams). Furthermore, you'll want to make sure it isn't roting as it would then be unable to hold the screws of a mount or tolerate the impact.

For a wood beam, this type of mounting bracket is best - bx-ac-36.

"overseas"?

I live on an Air Force Base in Japan - I know that technically we count as shipping to the US as far as regular mail is concerned; I have a 5-digit zip, etc., but I haven't tried to order anything large or heavy. I've been shopping for a heavy bag and a stand to put in my apartment. Will you ship to me, or am I stuck looking locally?

Unfortunately there are restrictions when it comes to heavy items like this. I recommend one of two otpions:

1. Grab an unfilled heavy bag case - bx-hv-540. Once you have this you can just secure some shredded textile found locally and stuff it.

2. Check around some local shops. Fighting arts are quite popular in Japan so you shouldn't have too much trouble.

Which bag?

I am looking to get a heavy bag for my house. I'm 130 pounds and 5'6". I teach BodyCombat and am looking for some actual contact at home. However, my better half is 6'0" and 230 and he wants to use the bag too. Is there a way to get one bag that we can both use? We also have four boys ranging in age from 2 to 12, so the older ones may want to hit on the back sometimes. Thanks for your help!!

Hi Mandi. I think the perfect bag for your needs is this one: tr-bg-07. For your husband, the base and bag are heavy enough to give him real resistance to his training. For you, the bag will be flexible and foam filled so as not to be overwhelming.

For the kids, the striking surface extends near to the floor, and provides a non-damaging striking surface (Softer on the hands than most hanging bags).

Size?

Hi there Im 16 and weigh 180 lbs. I workout everyday and I can bench roughly 300 lbs. I tried my friend's 70 lb bag and it was swinging alot so I thinking I should probably get the 100 lb bag. I don't know if that would be too heavy though, should i get that or the 80 lb bag?

100 is going to be a noticeable step up in resistance, but if 70 wasn't cutting it then 80 might not cut it either. Go 100 but be safe and use hand protection!

Type and Weight of Bag

So I've been reading all the reviews and am trying to figure out what type of bag and weight to buy. I am buying for my husband who is very physically fit. However, I want my daughter and myself to be able to use it too for kickboxing and strength training. Want one that isn't too hard when striking, but that is durable as well. Is this a good one and what weight would you recommend? Am looking at this one in the 100lb but didn't know if I should go with one more around 80lb? Thanks!

Hi Kyle. Shipping to Seattle will be no problem, you can order without worry.

As for the bag weight, that depends on your body weight and experience. Since you're 15 I would recommend going a bit lighter with the 80, however if you are a particularly big 15 year old (6 foot, 160 pounds) then go with the 100.

I noticed that some bags have chains on top, others material straps. What difference does this make? Are there positives, negatives to the different tops?

Hi denise. s far as I have been able to tell there is minimal difference in performance. The cloth tends to make a little less noise (as the chain is prone to rattling).

I also haven't noticed any difference in longevity, except that the chain is a bit easier to replace.

Bag hardening at the bottom?

Most bags that you buy in your local sports store are filled with multiple small bags of sand. Eventually the sand sinks to the bottom of the bag, causing the bottom half of the bag to get REALLY hard.

Does this bag settle and harden at the bottom?

Thanks.

Although generally this bag gets top-notch reviews, some users have said the filling does sink a bit after awhile. This doesn't make the bag unusable by any stretch, but since you are trying to avoid any sinking be aware that this bag is not immune.

Hi Mateusz. Since this bag is made out of vinyl I think it would be a fine choice for outdoor training. Vinyl has a toughness and water resistance to it that would work for the rigors of outdoor life.

type?

I am wanting to order a bag for my children, husband, & myself. I would like a really good one, but cheap. Also, how do they need to be hung up? I am on my own right now with my husband going overseas & I would have to hang it myself, so I would need it to be farely easy. Any kind you would recommend?

Hi Jennifer. In regards to what kind of bag to get, the one on this page or a canvas alternative like this: bx-hv-160 might work for you. Canvas is a bit cheaper than leather, although a bit less durable. I would also recommend a lighter weighted bag (like 60 lbs) since you'll be having your kids hit it too.

In regards to hanging it up, the bag will come with a chain and swivel. So you'll need to find a reliable beam in your home or purchase a freestanding heavy bag stand like this: bx-hv-90. After screwing the swivel into your strong beam, have an assistant hold the bag up just high enough while you take the chain and hook it into the swivel.

Well joonny we do ship online if you can get your parent/guardian to order for you. Otherwise you'll have to check traditional Sporting Goods stores near you.

Punching Bags Expert FAQs

  1. What weight heavy bag should I get?

70lb-90lb bags are the most commonly purchased bags and are appropriate for adults in the 140-170lb weight range. These bags often provide the right blend of resistance and give.
For individuals who are 170+lbs or who have developed significantly increased punching power, you may want to shop for 100+lb bags.
Lighter bags in the 25lb-60lb range are great for children or smaller adults who are just starting out in their training regiment.
When deciding what weight to get, keep in mind that getting a bag that is a bit lighter will increase the sway and motion during your training. This can be beneficial if you are looking to improve your footwork and reactions. Heavier bags have a tendency to stay in place and are better for developing penetration power.

  3. How do I hang up my heavy bag?

You will have two main options for hanging up your heavy bag - installing it into your ceiling or purchasing a mobile stand.
Many people who have garages or finished basements choose to install the bag directly into a support beam in their ceiling. To do this they either purchase a simple holder or attachment which can be securely fastened to the beam. This method is inexpensive, but it can also be troublesome due to the noise heavy bag training makes. If the beam the bag is attached to connects with the rest of the house, it might cause vibration and noise when struck.

The second option is purchasing a free stand. These steel constructed units can either be purposed solely for heavy bags, or involve multiple stations for different kinds of bags. It is recommended that users weight the bottom of the device to minimize shifting as the bag is struck and swung.

  4.
  5. What kind of hand protection should I use?

It's important to use proper hand protection during training routines, especially if you are just starting out on the heavy bag. A combination of handwrap + bag glove is your best bet.
Handwrap is an an inexpensive cloth roll that is used to protect the knuckles and skin from abrasion while securing the wrist for repeated impact. Bag gloves are designed with extra padding and firm support in order to disperse the impact of strikes and reduce the strain on your joints. Different bag gloves have different thicknesses, and the sturdier the heavy bag the more padding you might want in your gloves.

  6.
  7. What kind of bag exterior is best?

The main exterior types are vinyl, nylon, canvas, and leather. Other options include synthetic leather, polycanvas, and Everlast's Nevatear.
Professional gyms and locations that use heavy bags frequently choose leather bags for their superior durability and feel. Leather bags are more expensive and require that you rub moisturizer into them occasionally to prevent cracking. Vinyl, nylon, and canvas bags are less expensive and don't require maintenance, making them popular choices for at-home use. Canvas bags are durable but very abrasive against bare knuckles.
